Investment philosophy

Ownership with a longer horizon.

I approach investing as ownership in a business. The question I start with is what will make that business more useful, more difficult to replace, and better positioned to earn attractive returns over time.

I am drawn to capabilities that take years to build: specialised engineering, manufacturing expertise, distribution networks, critical infrastructure and scientific know-how. These advantages are often cumulative. Each generation of products, each customer relationship and each reinvestment can leave a business better equipped for the next opportunity.

A common thread is the ability to turn possibility into practical capacity. New technologies need reliable production, power and delivery. Customers need solutions that work beyond a demonstration. I look for companies that solve the difficult steps between an idea and its widespread use, particularly where replacing a supplier means rebuilding knowledge, trust or an entire process.

I also look for room to grow beyond today's core business. An established capability can open adjacent markets; a smaller specialist can develop an advantage that is not yet fully formed. Those are different investment cases, and I want to distinguish evidence of durability from the promise of it.

My aim is to own businesses whose competitive position can strengthen as the world changes. Growth matters, but so do the price paid, the capital required to sustain it and the possibility that the original thesis is wrong.
